Municipality of Eschenbach: BESS 15 MWh

The Municipality of Eschenbach operates its own site grid at grid level 5, which supplies the municipal works yard, the gravel plant, the school grounds and the gravel pit, among others. A significant share of the electricity comes from the municipality’s own photovoltaic systems and is used within a self-consumption community.

At the municipality’s gravel plant, NRG Solutions is building a battery storage system with a capacity of 15 MWh. It combines self-consumption optimization, reduction of load peaks, optimizing the timing of electricity purchases and participation in the market for ancillary services.

The project is implemented under a contracting model: NRG Solutions covers financing, planning, construction, management, operation and maintenance. The municipality provides the land and receives an annual fee over the planned contract term of 15 years.

Three battery containers and one power container are placed in a space-saving two-story steel structure. The infrastructure is prepared for EV charging, and a manually activated backup power function is to supply selected municipal facilities during power outages. Construction is scheduled to start in February 2027.
