Energy Management & Optimization

Maximum returns from your battery storage. Our multi-case strategy utilizes four revenue streams simultaneously, controlled by a proprietary energy management system.

Why is storage management so demanding?

A battery storage system is not a static device you switch on and forget. Energy markets change by the second. Ancillary service dispatches require millisecond response times. Tariffs are adjusted, load profiles fluctuate seasonally, and multiple revenue streams need to be coordinated.

Without professional management, a large-scale storage system remains far below its economic potential. Those who only do peak shaving miss out on ancillary service revenues. Those who only market ancillary services neglect self-consumption optimization.

The Problem

Most BESS operators utilize only one of four possible revenue streams. The multi-case strategy fundamentally changes that.

Multi-Case Strategy: Four Revenue Streams, One Storage System

The multi-case strategy uses a single battery storage system for multiple applications simultaneously. Instead of serving just one revenue stream, the EMS coordinates four different use cases throughout the day.

Peak shaving reduces load peaks during production hours and lowers grid charges. In lower-load phases, the storage provides ancillary services (frequency regulation) and stabilizes the power grid. When price spreads are high, arbitrage is traded: cheap electricity is stored and sold at a premium. And self-consumption optimization ensures that solar power from your own roof is used as much as possible within your own operations.

Key Principle

The applications do not compete. They complement each other over time. The EMS decides in real time which application generates the highest return.

NRG Approach: End-to-End Operation

You don't operate energy infrastructure -- we do. NRG handles the complete management of your battery storage: from real-time monitoring through intelligent optimization to energy trading and transparent reporting.

01

Monitoring

Our EMS monitors the storage system, grid consumption, production and market prices in real time. Every relevant change is captured and analyzed.

02

Optimization

Algorithms decide in milliseconds: peak shaving, ancillary service dispatch, arbitrage or self-consumption? The optimal strategy is automatically selected and executed.

03

Trading

Surplus capacity is marketed on the energy market. Ancillary service provision, arbitrage on price spreads and optimized grid consumption generate additional revenue.

04

Reporting

Transparent reports on all revenues, operational data and optimization measures. You can see how your storage system is performing at any time.

Proprietary Energy Management System

Our EMS is the heart of the management operation. It controls each storage system individually and networks multiple systems into a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). Technology-agnostic, manufacturer-independent and optimized for maximum value creation.

The platform integrates market data, weather forecasts, historical load profiles and ancillary service signals into a unified optimization model. Every discharge, every charge, every market access is automatically optimized for the most profitable strategy.

VPP Vision

Individual storage systems are networked into a virtual power plant. The larger the pool, the better the marketing opportunities and risk diversification.

EMS Platform in Detail

Technology-Agnostic

Our EMS works with all major BESS manufacturers and battery chemistries. No dependency on a single supplier.

Real-Time Optimization

Market prices, load profiles, weather forecasts and ancillary service signals are continuously analyzed. The storage system reacts to changes in milliseconds.

Virtual Power Plant

Multiple storage systems are networked into a virtual power plant. Larger pools enable access to additional marketing opportunities and better conditions.

Remote Control

Full remote monitoring and control of all storage systems. Updates, parameter adjustments and troubleshooting without on-site deployment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multi-case strategy means that a battery storage system does not serve just a single application but utilizes multiple revenue streams simultaneously. During production hours, peak shaving is applied; in lower-load phases, the storage provides ancillary services (frequency regulation); when price spreads are favorable, arbitrage is traded; and solar power is stored for self-consumption optimization. The EMS coordinates all applications automatically and prioritizes whichever is most economically beneficial.

NRG Optimization AG handles the entire operation: monitoring, optimization, energy trading and reporting. Technical maintenance is also coordinated by NRG. You need no in-house specialists and no internal effort. Your storage system is professionally managed while you focus on your core business.

Ancillary services encompass frequency regulation energy that Swissgrid needs to stabilize the power grid. A BESS can provide primary and secondary frequency regulation by feeding in or absorbing power within milliseconds when frequency deviations occur. NRG markets this capacity directly on the ancillary services market. Participation is fully automated and does not interfere with the storage system's other applications.

No. NRG offers a full-service approach. From monitoring through optimization to energy trading and reporting, everything is covered by NRG. You receive regular reports and have insight into performance at all times, but you don't need to allocate any of your own resources for storage operation.

Yes, that is exactly the core of the multi-case strategy. A BESS can perform peak shaving for your operations and simultaneously offer ancillary service capacity on the market within the same hour. The EMS coordinates the different applications automatically and ensures no conflicts arise. Remaining capacity is always deployed for the most economically attractive application.
