Investors invest on a project basis in individual battery energy storage system (BESS) projects, which are structured through separate Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs). Each project is clearly defined technically, economically and contractually, and represents an independent investment opportunity. The current project pipeline includes five developments of varying scale – from the 215 kWh Hofgenuss Rain installation to the 40 MWh area optimisation with charging hubs. Through the INVEST model, investors can participate as full or co-investors in these SPV structures. The battery systems are designed for an operational lifespan of over 15 years and generate returns through multiple contractually secured revenue streams. NRG Solutions assumes full operational responsibility, ensuring investors bear no operational burden.

The investment model is designed as a financing model. Investors provide capital, which is used to finance a specific battery storage project for the end customer. In return, investors receive a contractually defined interest rate or margin over an agreed term. NRG Solutions offers two primary models: The INVEST model enables full or co-investment in BESS installations via a dedicated SPV structure. The LEASE model is aimed at landowners and offers flexible options ranging from fixed rental income to revenue-share arrangements. Contract durations are typically 15 years for the INVEST model and 15 to 20 years for the LEASE model. The project company structure isolates risks and creates transparent economic conditions for all parties involved. Professional reporting ensures complete traceability of project performance throughout the investment period.

The investor is neither the operator nor the user of the battery storage system. The end customer uses the BESS for self-consumption optimisation, peak shaving or other use cases. The investor assumes exclusively the financing role and does not participate in the operational use of the system. The entire relationship with the end customer – from contract design through installation to ongoing operation – is managed by NRG Solutions. The SPV structure ensures that the rights and obligations of the investor are clearly separated from those of the end customer. Investors benefit from contractually defined cash flows without needing to engage with technical details or customer relationships. NRG Solutions acts as the central point of contact for both parties and coordinates all operational and commercial processes.

NRG Solutions is fully responsible for technical implementation, ongoing operation and management of the battery storage systems. This is achieved through our proprietary energy management system (EMS), which controls, monitors and optimises the storage around the clock. This ensures stable and traceable project performance at all times. Management activities include participation in ancillary service markets (SDL/Swissgrid), arbitrage strategies on the electricity market, and peak shaving optimisation for the end customer. All five projects in the current pipeline – including SABAG Rothenburg (5 MWh) and area optimisations up to 15 MWh – are managed by NRG. Investors receive regular, professional reporting with detailed performance metrics. The battery systems are designed for an operational lifespan exceeding 15 years and are continuously monitored to ensure maximum returns.

Repayment and interest are based on the contractually defined cash flows of the respective project setup. These are generated through multiple diversified revenue sources: First, ancillary services (SDL) for Swissgrid, where the battery storage provides grid stability and receives compensation. Second, peak shaving, which delivers measurable cost savings on grid charges for the end customer. Third, arbitrage strategies on the electricity market, exploiting price differentials between peak and off-peak periods. Fourth, capacity payments as an additional revenue source for providing secured capacity. Operational control and optimisation of all revenue streams is carried out by NRG via our proprietary EMS and the marketing structure of NRG Optimization. This diversification of income sources reduces concentration risks and creates a robust foundation for investor returns.
